BCIT Instructor supports earthquake reconstruction in Nepal

British Columbia Institute of Technology

In the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquake, Dr. Bishnu Pandey, Civil Engineering faculty member at BCIT, led a team of Canadian engineers on behalf of the Canadian Earthquake Engineering Association (CAEE) on a reconnaissance mission to Nepal. Dr. Pandey and his team conducted field surveys in rural areas severely affected by the earthquake, ultimately presenting their recommendations for recovery and reconstruction to Nepalese government.

Since then, Dr. Pandey has led BCIT’s efforts to support reconstruction in Nepal by developing technical guidelines for the construction of seismic-resistant stone houses. BCIT has also developed training materials for masons and carpenters who will be applying the guidelines. Reconstruction will be no small task, as several hundred thousand houses in Nepal’s hilly regions were damaged or destroyed.

At the request of the Nepalese government, Dr. Pandey will return to Nepal in January 2017 to begin a one-year mission as an Expert Advisor to the National Reconstruction Authority. In this role, he will advise the Authority on the reconstruction and seismic retrofitting of schools, clinics, and other public infrastructure and will provide policy advice for safe school reconstruction, as well as technical guidance on adapting state-of-the-art reconstruction methods to the local environment.

While in Nepal, Dr. Pandey will also support governments and communities in developing the capacity to build seismic-resistant public infrastructure.
