Durham College (DC) practices sustainability every day, especially in its Herman Miller-inspired space that is fully accessible to students and employees and serves as a hub for environmental awareness and action on campus.
The Sustainability Office is the campus hub where the college’s sustainability initiatives are hatched.
Home to the DC Living Green initiative and sustainability co-ordinator, the office serves to inspire and equip the campus with the appropriate resources to identify and implement new programs and activities designed to reduce the campus’s environmental footprint and inspire a sustainable mindset. Every aspect of the Sustainability office – from the walls and flooring to the lighting and furniture – has been selected to ensure environmentally sensitive design and production.
Recent achievements include a 2016 Smart Commute Silver Workplace in recognition of DC’s ongoing efforts to support and promote sustainable travel options for getting to and from campus.
The designation was awarded by Smart Commute, a program of Metrolinx and the municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. It is granted to organizations that provide and promote enhanced commuter options for its people. Using a scorecard, participating organizations are graded on their travel initiatives in categories such as programming, promotions, investments, incentives and infrastructure.
