Education abroad is often a transformative experience, which helps students to alter their understanding of their place in the world. However, “without preparation, critical thinking or a basic sense of curiosity, students are ill equipped to see the world as the complex interaction of culture, environment and politics that can both create and address our global issues” (CBIE, 2013).
Humber College’s unique Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) is an innovative cross-college, multidisciplinary model that offers all students a pathway and articulated set of “glocal” (global + local) learning outcomes to develop knowledge, skills and values that add a heightened global awareness to any studies.
Part of Humber’s Internationalization Strategy, recognized by Colleges and Institutes Canada in 2015 with the Gold Excellence Award for Internationalization, the GCC is comprised of 4 online academic course modules, a study or work-abroad experience component, and local service learning. Participants leave the program with a Certificate of Completion in Global Citizenship and comprehensive e-portfolio documenting their learning.
The program has been integral in helping transform students from “educational tourists” with international experience to global citizens who possess a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities for living in today’s interconnected world.
