North West College is on a weight-loss plan. It plans to lose hundreds of pounds in garbage.
In August 2016, North West launched the Tiny Trash program which is designed to promote sustainable operations by providing all staff an understanding of the amount of waste they personally produce and how to be proactive in reducing their ecological footprint.
All staff members are provided a blue, desk-side recycling bin and a gray, tiny trash can. The Tiny Trash is intended as a “yield sign”, explains Tiny Trash Committee member, Marlene Beaudry. “It gives us an opportunity to think about whether what we are disposing of can be recycled”.
Nestled in the heart of the Canadian prairies, North West College is doing its part to educate its staff and students on the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. The Tiny Trash program has proven hugely successful with North West’s two campuses and nearly twenty satellite sites having reduced their wasted significantly.
