Work Integrated Learning (WIL) for Aboriginal Plumbing and Pipefitting students

North West College

Since 2014, North West College has been offering the 17-week, applied-certificate, in plumbing and pipefitting to Aboriginal students in and around Meadow Lake, SK. What makes this program unique is that it is delivered in the heart of a plumbing and pipefitting operation. RobWel Constructors Limited Partnership and Northern Career Quest have welcomed North West College staff and students to RobWel’s work yard, provided the space, and helped fund the creation of a classroom in the middle of this industrial operation. Students receive hands on training at a working plumbing and pipefitting site and through available work placements establish relationships that may lead to future employment with RobWel.

Kevin Doherty, Ministry of Finance for the Government of Saskatchewan, stated this of the program.  “This is a great example of how our post-secondary institutions and business communities can work together to provide skilled graduates that businesses and industry need.

Now completing its third year of operations, the RobWel (WIL) Program shows no signs of slowing and stands as merely one example of the innovation which North West College brings to its programming and student services.
